Grain Brain

Grain Brain

Dr David Perlmutter
“Maintaining order rather than correcting disorder is the ultimate principle of wisdom. To cure disease after it has appeared is like digging a well when one feels thirsty, or forging weapons after the war has already begun.”
Nei Jing 2nd Century BC
Just finished reading this amazing book.
It is about lifestyle changes you can make to keep your brain healthy, vibrant and sharp, while dramatically reducing your risk for developing debilitating brain disease in the future.
Particularly interesting to me, as my father is in residential care with dementia and I have also worked with a number of people with degenerative neurological conditions, which have been  life limiting.
Important then to draw your attention to this book and it’s message-ways of reducing the prevalence of such conditions….
Dr Perlmutter states that the fate of your brain is not in your genes. It’s not inevitable. It’s in the food you eat. Brain disease can be largely prevented by the choices you make in life.
We need to eat foods that turn on the body’s own powerful antioxidant and detoxification pathways and reduce inflammation which is affecting the brain. For example curcumin from turmeric, green tea extract, DHA, sulforaphane (contained in broccoli) and ashwagandha.
It explains that the food we eat actually regulates the expression of many of our genes.
Human dietary requirement for carbohydrates is nil and they with gluten, cause inflammation and irritate the nervous system.
Study after study has shown that high cholesterol reduces your risk of brain disease and increases longevity. We require fat for health and life.
We can also enhance the growth of new brain cells by exercising and eating a reduced calorie diet, this increases the release of BDNF, the brains growth hormone, which also protects existing neurons.
All this and more – supported by a wealth of scientific research. Fascinating reading.
Many of us believe that we can live our lives however we choose and then when problems arise turn to our doctors for a quick fix. That’s just not so…
